Description
Posteriorly, the T11 vertebra is presented with the vertebral arch framing a triangular vertebral foramen, the laminae converging medially into a spinous process that is shorter and less steeply inferiorly angled than the more cranial thoracic levels. Laterally, the pedicles give rise to transverse processes, and the superior and inferior articular processes form the zygapophysial joints, their facet surfaces highlighted to indicate hyaline cartilage. The posterior surface of the vertebral body sits anterior to the foramen, while the articular pillars and transverse processes define the vertebra’s widest dimension. T11 sits at the thoracolumbar junction, where thoracic kyphosis transitions toward lumbar lordosis, and its morphology reflects that change. The altered spinous process angle and facet orientation affect extension and rotation mechanics and matter when localizing pain generators in lower thoracic facet arthropathy or when planning posterior instrumentation.
