Description
Centered in the frame, the inferior aspect of the second thoracic vertebra (T2) is presented with the vertebral body positioned anteriorly and the vertebral arch and spinous process extending posteriorly. Along the posterolateral margins of the vertebral body, the inferior costal demifacets (foveae costales inferiores) are visible bilaterally, oriented to meet the superior demifacet of T3 for articulation with the head of rib 3 at the costovertebral joint. The pedicles bridge the body to the laminae, enclosing the vertebral foramen, while the transverse processes project laterally toward the region where the transverse costal facets of the upper thoracic spine would meet the rib tubercle. Clean landmarks. Inferior views of a thoracic vertebra help clarify why rib head articulation spans two vertebral levels in typical ribs, and why T2 is a reliable segment for teaching the “demifacet rule” in the upper thorax. Clinically, this anatomy underpins thoracic pain generators such as costovertebral and costotransverse joint arthropathy, and it frames procedural planning when working near the posterior elements, including thoracic epidural access where the steeply angled spinous processes and narrow interlaminar windows alter needle trajectory compared with the cervical and lumbar regions.
