Description

Positioned in lateral profile within a transparent adult male head, the maxilla and mandible are rendered semi-transparently to frame the upper and lower dental arches in occlusion. Incisors, canine, premolars, and molars are shown from crown to root, with the maxillary teeth lying superior to their mandibular antagonists and the posterior dentition extending distally toward the ramus. Mesial to distal contact relationships read cleanly along the arch, while the alveolar processes of the maxilla and mandible envelop the root apices. One posterior tooth, likely a molar, is color-highlighted to draw attention. Occlusal relationships are easier to teach from the side. A lateral view clarifies overbite and overjet, cusp to fossa interdigitation in the premolar and molar region, and how the curve of Spee influences posterior contacts, all of which matter when planning restorative dentistry or assessing malocclusion. It also supports discussion of why third molars often become problematic, as the distal molar region approaches the anterior border of the mandibular ramus where space limitations contribute to impaction and pericoronitis. Dental anatomy and occlusion courses can use this artwork to orient students before moving to intraoral photographs, typodont exercises, or cephalometric analysis. It also fits patient education handouts on bite correction, crown placement, and temporomandibular disorder counseling, where a side profile helps explain how posterior contacts affect mandibular position. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
