Description
Prominent superficial facial veins course over the anterior skull and nose, with a dense venous anastomosis spanning the dorsum nasi and nasal sidewalls. Medial canthal tributaries converge superiorly toward the angular vein at the side of the nose, while smaller venules interconnect across the bridge and alar region before draining inferiorly into the facial vein territory. Bony landmarks remain visible beneath the network, including the nasal bones, piriform aperture, orbits, maxilla, and dentition, helping orient the vessels in relation to the nasal cavity and medial orbital rim. Spatially, the venous web sits superficial to the nasal skeleton and cartilage, centered in the midline and extending laterally toward the infraorbital and cheek region. Clinically, this anterior mapping of nasal venous anastomoses matters because the angular vein communicates with the superior ophthalmic vein and, through it, the cavernous sinus, creating a recognized pathway for retrograde spread of infection from the so called danger triangle of the face. Small furuncles of the vestibule, nasal cellulitis, and septic thrombophlebitis can track along these valveless channels, and this illustration makes the medial canthus the landmark to watch. Surgeons and injectors also use these relationships when planning rhinoplasty incisions or placing dermal fillers along the nasal dorsum, where inadvertent intravascular injection can propagate toward the orbit.
