Description
Seen from an inferior cranial perspective, the dural venous lacunae (lateral lacunae) flank the superior sagittal sinus near the midline, forming a shallow reservoir system within the meningeal layers adjacent to the inner table of the calvaria. Blue venous channels course posteriorly toward the dural sinus pathway, while red arterial branches spread across the basal cerebral surface, consistent with components of the circulus arteriosus cerebri and proximal cerebral arteries. Yellow cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem and basal forebrain, radiating anteriorly and laterally, with their roots clustered around the midline structures at the base. Spatially, the lacunae lie superior to the basal cranial nerves and basal vessels, but remain closely applied to the endocranial surface. For teaching dural venous drainage, this angle is practical because it relates the venous lacunae to the superior sagittal sinus and the calvarial inner table, the same relationship encountered when elevating a bone flap in parasagittal craniotomy. Those lateral lacunae frequently receive arachnoid granulations, a point that helps explain why prominent granulations can mimic lytic lesions on CT or appear as filling defects along the sinus-lacunar complex on venography. Bleeding here is different. It is low pressure but diffuse, and it can complicate epidural dissection near the midline. Use it in neuroanatomy and neurosurgical anatomy courses to anchor discussions of dural sinuses, arachnoid granulations, and the venous side of intracranial pressure physiology, alongside the basal arterial circle and cranial nerve topography. It also fits well in atlases and operative approach chapters covering midline craniotomy planning and interpretation of MRV/CTV findings around the superior sagittal sinus region.
