Description
Sectioned cranial bone frames the posterior cranial fossa while the brain sits in situ, its gyri and sulci visible beneath partially transparent meninges. Along the posterolateral aspect of the cranial cavity, the sigmoid sinus is traced as a blue, S-shaped dural venous sinus that curves inferiorly and anteriorly from the transverse sinus toward the jugular foramen. Medial to it lie the cerebellar hemisphere and cerebellar vermis region, while the petrous part of the temporal bone and mastoid region form the lateral bony boundary. Smaller superficial cortical veins converge toward the dural sinuses, contrasting with red arterial channels on the cerebral surface. For teaching cranial venous drainage, the sigmoid sinus is the landmark that connects intracranial dural flow to the internal jugular vein at the jugular bulb, and its groove in the temporal and occipital bones explains why mastoid and retrosigmoid corridors demand respect for venous anatomy. Surgeons use its curvature and relationship to the jugular foramen when planning a retrosigmoid craniotomy for vestibular schwannoma or microvascular decompression, and radiologists track this same segment when evaluating dural venous sinus thrombosis or a dominant sigmoid sinus that can mimic a mass effect on CT and MR venography.
