Description
Crossing the lateral surface of the temporal lobe, the vein of Labbé (inferior anastomotic vein) is rendered as a substantial superficial cortical vein running posteroinferiorly to drain into the transverse sinus along the attached margin of the tentorium cerebelli. A partial skull section frames the intracranial contents, with calvarial bone cut away to expose the cerebral hemispheres, the dural venous sinus system, and adjacent meningeal surfaces. Superior to Labbé, the cortical venous network tracks across the temporal and inferior parietal gyri toward the superior sagittal sinus via the superficial middle cerebral venous pathway. Spatially, the transverse sinus lies posteroinferior to the temporal pole and posterior to the petrous region, providing the key outflow target for this anastomotic channel. Labbé matters because it is a named, variable, and surgically vulnerable bridge between the superficial middle cerebral vein and the transverse sinus, and injury can precipitate temporal lobe venous infarction with hemorrhagic transformation. That risk becomes concrete during lateral skull base and temporal craniotomies, where dural opening, tentorial work, or retraction near the temporal convexity can thrombose or avulse the vein. A short vein can tether the temporal lobe to the transverse sinus. A dominant Labbé is not forgiving. Neuroanatomy and neurosurgery courses use this plate to teach superficial cortical venous drainage patterns and their relationship to dural venous sinuses, and it fits well in atlases covering temporal lobe approaches, tentorial landmarks, and venous complication avoidance. It also supports radiology teaching when correlating MRV/CTV findings with postoperative venous infarcts along the inferior temporal and temporoparietal cortex.
