Displayed within a cross-section of the male calvaria, the vein of Labbé (inferior anastomotic vein) courses over the lateral cerebral hemisphere, running superficially along the temporal lobe toward the dural venous sinuses. Its path lies inferior to the sylvian venous complex and superior to the petrous temporal bone, bridging cortical veins to the transverse sinus region along the tentorial attachment. Surrounding anatomy logically includes the cerebral gyri and sulci of the temporal and parietal lobes, the posterior fossa contents with cerebellum inferior and posterior, and the brainstem descending centrally toward the foramen magnum. Neurosurgeons and interventionalists care about this vein because it is a dominant outflow route for the lateral temporal lobe, and its caliber and drainage pattern vary enough to change operative risk. Injury or thrombosis can produce venous infarction and hemorrhagic contusion of the temporal cortex, a complication discussed in skull base approaches, subtemporal craniotomy, and temporal lobectomy where bridging veins to the transverse sinus are at stake. Venous anatomy often gets less attention than arterial territories.
