Description
Seen from a superior laryngeal perspective, the vestibular ligament forms the core of each vestibular fold (false vocal cord) along the lateral margin of the rima vestibuli, lying superior to the true vocal folds and medial to the thyroid cartilage laminae. Posteriorly, the folds converge toward the arytenoid cartilages, with the aryepiglottic folds and the laryngeal inlet framing the field superiorly. Between the vestibular and vocal folds, the laryngeal ventricle opens as a recessed cleft, separating the pliable supraglottic tissue from the sharper free edge of the vocal ligament at the glottis. That spatial relationship matters when you are teaching or planning supraglottic airway and voice interventions, because the vestibular folds can approximate during effort closure and edema, obscuring the true cords during laryngoscopy and altering phonation patterns. Supraglottitis and allergic laryngeal edema often thicken the vestibular folds first, narrowing the supraglottic airway while the glottic aperture may remain partly visible from above. Surgeons also use this anatomy when orienting endoscopic approaches for supraglottic lesions and when distinguishing the ventricle as a landmark, since the saccule extends anterosuperiorly from it and can be involved in laryngocele. Use this superior view in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to clarify the layered organization of the larynx, and in otolaryngology teaching files to label the false cords, ventricle, and true vocal folds in the same operative orientation seen during direct laryngoscopy.
