Description
Transparent, selectively colored rendering of both lungs in anterior orientation, with the visceral pleura treated as translucent to expose the interlobar (fissural) surfaces deep to the convex costal facies. The oblique fissures course inferoanteromedially to separate superior from inferior lobes, and on the right lung the horizontal fissure runs transversely to demarcate the middle lobe from the superior lobe. Interlobar planes lie medial to the lateral lung margins and wrap toward the hilum, where lobar bronchial and pulmonary arterial branches begin to segregate with their respective lobes. Clear lobar geography. Teaching the interlobar surfaces matters because fissures are the practical boundaries surgeons and radiologists rely on when they localize disease to a lobe or plan a resection. An anterior, translucent treatment helps you follow how an upper-lobe process can abut the oblique fissure and project toward the middle lobe on the right, or how pleural fluid and pneumothorax outline fissural planes on upright chest radiography and CT. This is also the perspective that clarifies why incomplete fissures can permit spread of pneumonia across lobes and complicate lobectomy planes.
