Description
Cross-sectional anatomy through the thorax captures the heart (cor) in transverse plane, with the right and left ventricles separated by the interventricular septum and wrapped by thick myocardium. The left ventricle typically appears as a more circular chamber with a thicker wall, positioned posterolateral to the crescentic right ventricle, while the atria sit more posteriorly relative to the ventricles at most mid-cardiac levels. Depending on slice height, the atrioventricular valves (tricuspid on the right, mitral on the left) and semilunar valves (pulmonary and aortic) align centrally with the outflow tracts. Great vessels course adjacent to the chambers, and coronary vessels trace along the epicardial surface within the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves. A transverse heart view is the workhorse orientation for correlating anatomy with axial CT and MRI, where chamber size, wall thickness, and valve location guide rapid pattern recognition. Septal defects, ventricular hypertrophy, and pericardial effusion are assessed in this plane, and the relationship of the aortic root to the right ventricular outflow tract becomes clear. Short-axis understanding also maps directly to coronary artery territories, linking regional wall motion abnormalities to the left anterior descending, circumflex, and right coronary distributions.
