Description
Right lateral presentation of the cardiac base centers on the right atrium, with the superior vena cava entering its superior aspect and the inferior vena cava approaching inferiorly toward the atriocaval junction. Anterior and slightly inferior, the right ventricle forms much of the right border, while the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk arise anterosuperiorly and cross in close proximity at the level of the arterial roots. Posterior to the right atrium, the left atrium contributes to the base, receiving the pulmonary veins, and the coronary (atrioventricular) sulcus marks the plane between atria and ventricles along the diaphragmatic margin. This orientation matters when you want to understand venous inflow and the external landmarks that guide right-sided cannulation and atriotomy. The right atrium and its relationship to the superior vena cava underpin central venous catheter tip positioning, while the inferior vena cava course is a practical reference in echocardiography and in assessment of volume status. It also frames the surface anatomy for conduction system-adjacent procedures, since right atrial access in electrophysiology must respect the interatrial septal region and the proximity of the aortic root.
