Description
Oriented in a right anterior oblique projection, the heart is presented as a cor (cardiac muscle) surface study with the epicardial coronary vessels omitted to keep attention on myocardial contours. The right atrium and right ventricle dominate the anterior aspect, with the right ventricle forming most of the sternocostal surface and tapering inferiorly toward the apex. Superiorly, the conus arteriosus leads into the pulmonary trunk while the ascending aorta sits posterior and slightly to the right of it, and the left ventricle appears more lateral and posterior but contributes to the left margin and the apical silhouette. Removing the coronary arteries and cardiac veins makes the external topography easier to read when you need clean landmarks for orientation. This is the view that aligns with many operative and interventional approaches to the anterior heart, where distinguishing right ventricular free wall from the more muscular left ventricular contour guides access and reduces the risk of inadvertent ventricular entry during subxiphoid pericardiocentesis. It also supports teaching the pericardial relationships and surface anatomy used when interpreting a frontal chest radiograph or correlating with the parasternal long and short axis windows in transthoracic echocardiography.
