Description
Anteriorly, the sternocostal surface of the heart is presented as bare myocardium, with the coronary arteries and cardiac veins intentionally removed to clarify the muscle contours. The right ventricle occupies most of the anterior surface, while the left ventricle forms the left margin and rounds into the apex inferiorly and to the left. Superiorly, the base transitions toward the roots of the great vessels, and the right border tracks along the right atrium, even when chamber boundaries are suggested only by surface geometry. No vessels. Just myocardium. Stripping away the coronary vasculature makes this view useful for teaching external chamber relationships and for orienting readers who confuse the sternocostal silhouette with a purely left ventricular structure. It also supports clinical discussions where surface landmarks, rather than arteries, guide interpretation, for example correlating anterior wall infarction on ECG with the predominance of right ventricular myocardium on the sternocostal face, or explaining why pericardiocentesis targets the pericardial space rather than the muscle mass seen here. The clean myocardial surface is also a good reference when introducing the pericardium and mediastinal relations, before layering in epicardial fat and vessels.
