Description

Branched Trichoderma conidiophores rise from a textured substrate, their hyaline to lightly pigmented stalks dividing repeatedly into short lateral branches that terminate in phialides. Along the distal tips, the phialides give rise to compact, grape-like clusters of conidia, shown here as dense green spheres aggregated at the ends of the branching system. Proximally, the supporting hyphae remain closer to the surface, while the reproductive elements project outward into the surrounding space. Scale matters. This morphology is the teaching anchor for separating Trichoderma from other common soil molds in culture, where rapid growth and green conidiation can be mistaken for Penicillium or early Aspergillus without careful attention to phialide arrangement and conidial clustering. The highly branched conidiophore architecture also connects directly to laboratory workflow, since sporulating structures are what you sample for lactophenol cotton blue mounts and what you avoid aerosolizing when handling plates. In agricultural and indoor environmental contexts, these conidia explain both the organism’s dispersal and the practical limits of visual inspection of soil and compost.
