Description
Elongated and fusiform in overall profile, the Trypanosoma cell is rendered as a single flagellate protozoan with a tapering anterior end and a posterior region that houses the kinetoplast adjacent to the basal body. A single flagellum emerges near the kinetoplast, runs along the cell surface, and forms an undulating membrane before projecting freely at the anterior pole. Centrally placed, the nucleus sits in the midbody, separated from the kinetoplast by a clear cytoplasmic interval that helps orient anterior to posterior polarity. Scale and topology are clear. Morphology matters for diagnosis in blood films and tissue aspirates, where trypomastigotes are identified by their slender, curved body, prominent nucleus, and the small, dense kinetoplast that sits posterior to the nucleus in African trypanosomes. That posterior kinetoplast and attached flagellum are not decorative details, they define the kinetoplastid lineage and help distinguish Trypanosoma from other hemoflagellates and from apicomplexan parasites on light microscopy.
