A single flagellum emerges near the kinetoplast, runs along the cell surface, and forms an undulating membrane before projecting freely at the anterior pole. Morphology matters for diagnosis in blood films and tissue aspirates, where trypomastigotes are identified by their slender, curved body, prominent nucleus, and the small, dense kinetoplast that sits posterior to the nucleus in African trypanosomes.
