Description
Demodex is presented as an elongate acarine with a long, cylindrical opisthosoma extending posteriorly from a compact anterior gnathosoma and podosoma. Short, stumpy legs cluster near the anterior third of the body, positioned ventrolaterally and projecting only slightly beyond the body margin, a configuration that fits its niche within the pilosebaceous unit. An anterior capitulum with mouthparts sits at the most rostral end, while the tapered posterior abdomen trails distally. Clinical interest centers on where this mite lives and what its body plan implies for sampling and disease association: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis inhabit hair follicles and sebaceous glands, respectively, and their anteriorly concentrated limbs and mouthparts support anchoring and feeding within follicular keratin and sebum. Overpopulation correlates with demodicosis and is often discussed in the differential for rosacea-like papulopustular eruptions and chronic blepharitis, where mite density along eyelash follicles can contribute to cylindrical dandruff at the lash base. Recognizing the segmented, wormlike abdomen and the anterior leg cluster helps distinguish Demodex from other ectoparasites when reviewing skin scrapings, lash epilates, or adhesive tape preparations under light microscopy. Size matters. Use this asset in dermatology and ophthalmology teaching materials to illustrate the parasite’s gross microscopic morphology, or in clinical lab manuals covering specimen collection and identification in suspected demodicosis and blepharitis.
