Demodex (an acarid mite within the arthropods) is typically presented as an elongated, cigar shaped organism with a gnathosoma at the anterior end and a short podosoma carrying four pairs of stubby, jointed legs clustered in the anterior third of the body. Posterior to the leg-bearing segment, the opisthosoma tapers distally into a striated abdomen that extends well beyond the coxal bases. Pedipalps and chelicerae sit anterior and medial, while the paired legs project laterally from the ventral surface, their terminal claws oriented for anchoring in a confined epithelial space.
