Description
Demodex folliculorum is positioned lengthwise within the lumen of a human hair follicle, its elongated gnathosoma oriented toward the follicular infundibulum and its opisthosoma tapering deeper toward the bulb. Short, stumpy legs arise from the anterior podosoma and sit close to the follicular wall, with the mite’s dorsal surface opposed to the inner root sheath and the ventral surface facing the hair shaft. Mouthparts (including palps and chelicerae) are shown at the anterior pole where the organism feeds at the follicular opening. Small. Persistent. Clinically, the follicular placement matters because Demodex density rises in conditions where follicular microenvironment and sebum composition change, and the organism’s anterior clustering at the infundibulum correlates with cylindrical dandruff and lid margin inflammation in demodicosis. This view supports teaching of why lash epilation and microscopic evaluation target the follicle itself, and why mite-associated blepharitis can mimic dry eye disease until collarettes and follicular plugging are recognized. It also frames the inflammatory pathway suspected in rosacea, where mite-related antigen exposure and bacterial carriage can amplify perifollicular immune response.
