Pigmented conidial walls appear thick and roughened, consistent with dematiaceous molds, while septate hyphae or conidiophores course between the spores as elongated tubular elements. Spore clusters sit superficially, with hyphal strands tracking around and between them rather than overlying them. Texture dominates. Recognition of Ulocladium cellular structure matters because its conidia can resemble those of Alternaria and other darkly pigmented fungi on direct examination, and that distinction affects how a culture is interpreted in indoor air investigations and in the workup of suspected phaeohyphomycosis.
