Bony and soft-tissue radiographic landmarks appear in relation, including the lower ribs, lumbar vertebrae, iliac crests, and pelvic brim, which frame the expected positions of the hepatic flexure in the right upper quadrant and the splenic flexure high in the left upper quadrant. As the sequence progresses, haustra and the overall caliber of the bowel are emphasized while the muscular boundaries of the abdominal wall are outlined to orient anterior surface anatomy.
