Description
Beginning at the renal pelvis, each ureter descends retroperitoneally along the anterior surface of the psoas major, passing inferiorly from the kidney hilum toward the pelvic brim. The animation tracks the tubes as they cross anterior to the common iliac bifurcation (often the external iliac vessels) and then curve anteromedially within the pelvis to reach the posterolateral bladder wall. As the distal ureters approach the urinary bladder, their intramural segments obliquely traverse the detrusor to open at the superolateral angles of the trigone, a relationship shown in sequence to clarify the anti-reflux course. Narrow points are emphasized along the path. Ureteral anatomy matters most when something blocks the lumen. Calculi commonly lodge at the ureteropelvic junction, at the iliac vessel crossing, or at the ureterovesical junction, and the changing caliber and curvature along the animated pathway helps explain why colicky flank pain can migrate from the costovertebral angle toward the groin as the stone moves distally. Distally, the male ureter runs near the seminal vesicles and is crossed by the ductus deferens before entering the bladder, an anatomic setup that underlies iatrogenic ureteral injury during pelvic surgery and during dissection around the bladder base. No guesswork. Use this sequence in gross anatomy teaching of the posterior abdominal wall and pelvis, in urology modules covering ureteral obstruction and ureteroscopic access, or in radiology content paired with CT urogram, intravenous urography, or retrograde pyelography to orient the expected ureteral course and constrictions.
