Arising from the renal pelvis at the ureteropelvic junction, each ureter descends retroperitoneally from the kidney to the urinary bladder as a muscular tube with a narrow, slit-like lumen. The animation traces the course anterior to the psoas major, with the ureter remaining medial to the colon and passing from the posterior abdominal wall into the pelvis as it crosses the pelvic brim near the bifurcation of the common iliac artery. Three radiographic constrictions are emphasized in sequence: the ureteropelvic junction, the crossing over the iliac vessels, and the intramural segment at the ureterovesical junction, where the ureter runs obliquely through the detrusor to open at the trigone.
