Description

Radiographic transparency isolates the cerebrospinal fluid spaces of the adult male brain, centering on the paired lateral ventricles with their anterior (frontal) horns, bodies, atria, posterior (occipital) horns, and inferior (temporal) horns. Medial to the caudate nuclei and superior to the thalami, the lateral ventricles narrow toward the interventricular foramina (of Monro), which open into the midline third ventricle between the thalami. The sequence tracks CSF continuity inferiorly through the cerebral aqueduct in the dorsal midbrain to the fourth ventricle, positioned posterior to the pons and upper medulla and anterior to the cerebellum, with the choroid plexus highlighted along the ventricular roofs. Hydrocephalus is a problem of pathways, and this animation keeps those pathways visually explicit as the ventricular system is followed stepwise from lateral to third to fourth ventricle. Aqueductal stenosis, intraventricular hemorrhage with clot obstruction at the foramina of Monro, and mass effect from pineal region tumors or posterior fossa lesions each produce characteristic patterns of upstream ventricular dilatation that are easier to teach when the viewer can watch the route and narrowing points in order rather than infer them from a single frame.
