Description

Radiographic styling brings the paired ureters into sharp relief as they descend retroperitoneally from the renal pelvis of each kidney along the posterior abdominal wall. Each muscular tube tracks inferiorly on the anterior surface of psoas major, remaining medial to the kidneys and then coursing toward the pelvic brim where it passes anterior to the common iliac artery near its bifurcation. Color emphasis and sequential highlighting follow the ureteral path from the ureteropelvic junction, through the abdominal segment, into the pelvis, and finally to the ureterovesical junction at the posterolateral bladder wall. Landmarks stay consistent. Clinically, that course maps directly onto the common sites of obstruction and pain referral in ureterolithiasis, where calculi often lodge at the ureteropelvic junction, at the iliac vessel crossing, or at the intramural ureter as it enters the bladder. The animation’s stepwise progression clarifies how a structure that lies outside the peritoneal cavity can still be injured during anterior approaches to the lumbar spine, aortoiliac surgery, or pelvic procedures, and why the ureter’s relationship to the psoas and iliac vessels matters when interpreting a KUB radiograph or CT scout.
