Description

Rotating in three dimensions, the male liver is presented as a wedge-shaped organ occupying the right hypochondrium and epigastrium, with the domed diaphragmatic surface superior and the visceral surface directed posteroinferiorly. The animation tracks the right and left lobes (lobus hepatis dexter et sinister) separated anteriorly by the falciform ligament, then sweeps inferiorly to the porta hepatis where the portal vein lies posterior to the proper hepatic artery and common hepatic duct. Peritoneal reflections (coronary and triangular ligaments) and the fissures for the ligamentum teres and ligamentum venosum appear sequentially as the view transitions from anterior to posterior, bringing the groove for the inferior vena cava and the hepatic veins into alignment. Segmental anatomy matters. Couinaud segments I to VIII are defined by portal inflow and hepatic venous outflow, and the animation’s stepwise highlighting clarifies how the middle hepatic vein approximates Cantlie’s line between functional right and left hemilivers, a point that can be hard to internalize from static plates. In cross-sectional imaging, the porta hepatis, gallbladder fossa, and IVC groove act as durable landmarks for orienting CT and MRI, while the sequential emphasis on segment I (caudate lobe) supports understanding of its independent venous drainage and its behavior in cirrhosis and portal hypertension.
