Description

Beginning at the anterior cranial vault and progressing posteriorly in sequence, the animation tracks a coronal slice through an adult male head, keeping the cerebral hemispheres centered within the bony cranium. Cortical gyri and sulci of the cerebrum occupy the intracranial space, separated at the midline by the interhemispheric fissure where the falx cerebri would lie, while the inner table of the frontal and parietal bones forms the superior and lateral boundary of the cranial cavity. Medially, deep white matter and the ventricular system come into view as the cut advances, with the lateral ventricles and corpus callosum appearing and receding depending on the slice level. Bone stays fixed as brain contours change. Coronal anatomy is how you read a large proportion of head CT and MRI, and the animation’s stepwise movement through contiguous slices makes it easier to build a three-dimensional map than a single frame ever can.
