Description
Intrinsic plantar musculature is built up in layers from the plantar aponeurosis to the metatarsals, and the animation sequences these groups to clarify how toe motion and arch support are coupled. Superficially, abductor hallucis runs along the medial border toward the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux, flexor digitorum brevis lies centrally to the lateral side of the long flexor tendons, and abductor digiti minimi tracks the lateral margin to the fifth toe. Deeper frames bring in quadratus plantae inserting onto the flexor digitorum longus tendon, lumbricals arising from the long flexor tendons, flexor hallucis brevis with its sesamoids at the first metatarsophalangeal joint, adductor hallucis (oblique and transverse heads), flexor digiti minimi brevis, and the dorsal and plantar interossei spanning between metatarsals to the proximal phalanges. Lines of pull are animated. You see proximal to distal force transfer across the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. Clinically, this set of muscles explains why intrinsic weakness can produce claw toes and metatarsalgia, and why balancing the hallux abductors and adductors matters in hallux valgus progression at the first ray. Animated contraction against a fixed calcaneus and metatarsal heads makes the relationship to the medial longitudinal arch, lateral longitudinal arch, and transverse arch easier to teach than a still plate, because you can follow how the plantar aponeurosis and intrinsic muscles tension the midfoot while the toes flex, abduct, and adduct. Quadratus plantae is a key teaching point, it redirects flexor digitorum longus force to reduce the oblique pull toward the lateral toes.
