As the sequence advances, paired spinal nerves exit through the intervertebral foramina and diverge into dorsal and ventral rami, with the ventral rami forming the cervical, brachial, lumbar, and sacral plexuses that distribute peripheral sensory and motor fibers into the trunk and limbs. Peripheral nerves track distally along fascial planes and between muscle compartments, while posterior cutaneous branches return toward the skin. Orientation stays in anatomical position as the neural tree is built from central to peripheral. Clinical teaching lands quickly when you can follow a single level from cord to target: cervical roots toward the upper limb, thoracic intercostal nerves along the ribs, and lumbosacral roots into the sciatic nerve descending posterior to the hip and thigh.
