Beginning in the cranial cavity, the animation traces the central nervous system from the cerebral hemispheres through the diencephalon and brainstem, then follows the spinal cord as it descends within the vertebral canal to the conus medullaris and cauda equina. Cranial nerves emerge from the ventral brainstem to course anteriorly and laterally toward the face and neck, while spinal nerve roots exit segmentally through the intervertebral foramina. As the sequence progresses inferiorly, peripheral nerves are shown diverging from the cervical, brachial, lumbar, and sacral plexuses to travel along the trunk and into the limbs, separating into sensory afferent and motor efferent pathways. Clinical relevance is hardwired into this layout. Tracking the pathway from cortex to corticospinal tract to anterior horn cell clarifies why an internal capsule infarct produces dense contralateral weakness, while a peripheral lesion in the radial or common fibular nerve yields a focal motor deficit with a distinct dermatomal or cutaneous sensory pattern.
