Beginning at the abdominal aorta, the superior mesenteric artery emerges inferior to the celiac trunk and courses anterior to the third part of the duodenum before fanning into ileocolic, right colic, and middle colic branches that track within the mesentery toward the cecum, ascending colon, and proximal transverse colon. Inferiorly, the inferior mesenteric artery arises from the aorta and divides into the left colic, sigmoid arteries, and the superior rectal artery, supplying the distal transverse colon at the splenic flexure through to the upper rectum. As the sequence progresses, the marginal artery of Drummond becomes apparent along the mesenteric border of the colon, with straight vasa recta extending perpendicularly to the colonic wall as pulsatile blood flow is visualized distally. Spatial relationships remain oriented to the male abdomen, with the colonic frame encircling the small bowel centrally. Colonic perfusion is a surgical and ischemic problem, not an academic one.
