Description
Rendered in vivid red, the male human heart appears in active systole, with the left ventricle forming most of the left and inferior border and tapering to the apex, while the right ventricle occupies the anterior surface just inferior to the pulmonary trunk. Superiorly, the ascending aorta rises posterior and slightly rightward from the left ventricular outflow tract, and the pulmonary trunk courses anterior to the aorta before bifurcation. The animation cycles through contraction and partial relaxation, letting the atrial auricles (right and left atrial appendages) subtly change contour along the superior aspect as the ventricles shorten and twist around the long axis. Coronary arteries and veins track over the epicardial surface, with the superior and inferior venae cavae approaching the right atrium on the right, one from a superior and one from an inferior direction. Systolic mechanics matter because most clinically relevant failure patterns reflect altered ventricular contraction and coupling to the great vessels, from reduced left ventricular ejection in dilated cardiomyopathy to pressure-loaded hypertrophy in aortic stenosis.
