Description
Radiating through the female mammary gland, arterial branches course from the deep surface over pectoralis major toward the glandular parenchyma, then arborize into smaller arterioles within the adipose stroma. Lobules sit predominantly in the peripheral gland, their lactiferous ducts converging anteromedially toward the nipple and areolar complex, while suspensory connective tissue septa (Cooper ligaments) partition fat and gland as they run from dermis to the deep fascia. A posterior muscular bed, including pectoral fibers, anchors the breast to the anterior chest wall. Small-caliber vessels track alongside ducts and within interlobular connective tissue. Understanding the arterial network matters when you need to predict bleeding and tissue viability: mastectomy and oncoplastic reductions depend on preserving reliable inflow to the skin flaps and nipple areola complex through perforators and superficial branches. Lateral supply is commonly derived from the lateral thoracic artery and pectoral branch of the thoracoacromial artery, while medial perforators from the internal thoracic artery often dominate near the parasternal region, an anatomic pattern that also shapes the target zones for embolization or control of hemorrhage after trauma or biopsy.
