Description

Arising along the lateral chest wall, the lateral mammary arterial supply is traced as it courses toward the breast parenchyma, sending peripheral branches through the adipose layer to the lobular glandular tissue. Superficial fat overlies the gland, while the deep surface rests against the pectoralis major fascia, with the vascular arborization running mainly in an anterolateral distribution. Red arterial channels contrast with accompanying blue venous pathways, and blue lymphatic collectors track toward the axillary region. Pectoralis major lies posterior to the breast mound and defines the deep plane for orientation. Attention to the lateral arterial pattern matters when teaching the dominant contributors to breast perfusion, often via branches associated with the lateral thoracic and related pectoral vessels, and how these vessels intersect with axillary lymphatic drainage. This is the territory encountered during axillary tail dissection, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and mastectomy flap elevation, where injury to perforators can compromise skin flap viability and increase postoperative hematoma risk. Small-caliber arterioles at the periphery also frame discussions of why lateral breast bruising and postoperative seroma tend to track toward the axilla. Clear landmarks. Fewer surprises in the OR. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and breast surgery curricula to anchor spatial relationships between breast gland, subcutaneous fat, and pectoral musculature, or in medical publishing where a clean lateral vascular map supports chapters on oncologic resection planes and reconstruction planning. It also reads well in patient-education materials explaining why axillary procedures can affect both drainage and sensation around the lateral breast. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
