Description
Sectioned seminal vesicle tissue is presented as a lobulated, honeycombed glandular mass, with multiple mucosal folds and glandular lobules opening into an irregular central lumen. Coiled secretory tubules and intervening connective tissue septa create the characteristic spongy appearance, and the lobules converge toward the medial aspect where the excretory duct would course to join the ampulla of the ductus deferens and form the ejaculatory duct. Orientation is consistent with pelvic anatomy, with the seminal vesicle positioned posterior to the urinary bladder base and anterior to the rectum, and its duct traveling anteromedially toward the prostate. Cut sections like this matter because the seminal vesicle is not a simple sac but a highly folded tubular gland, and that folded mucosa accounts for its large secretory surface area and frequent imaging pitfalls. On transrectal ultrasound or MRI, normal lobulation and intraluminal folds can mimic septations or small cystic spaces, while true pathology includes seminal vesicle dilatation in ejaculatory duct obstruction, hemorrhage after biopsy, and invasion by prostate carcinoma extending along the ejaculatory ducts. Small structures, big consequences.
