Description
Running superficially along the posterior midline of the male calf, the lesser saphenous vein (small saphenous vein) begins from the lateral end of the dorsal venous arch of the foot and ascends posterior to the lateral malleolus. It then tracks superiorly in the subcutaneous tissue over the gastrocnemius toward the popliteal fossa, where it typically pierces the deep fascia. Deep companion channels in the leg and around the knee are suggested in the background, clarifying the relationship between the superficial venous network and the deeper venous trunks. Posterior leg venous anatomy matters because the small saphenous vein is a frequent source of symptomatic varicosities and reflux that can be missed when attention stays on the great saphenous territory.
