Description
Anterior cervical anatomy centers on the bilobed thyroid gland, with right and left lobes hugging the anterolateral surfaces of the upper trachea and the isthmus crossing the midline just inferior to the cricoid cartilage. Superiorly, the gland sits immediately below the larynx, while inferiorly it descends toward the suprasternal notch, following the tracheal rings. A translucent anterior torso and neck allow the thyroid to be read in situ against the expected outlines of the hyoid region, laryngeal framework, and proximal airway. Midline orientation is clear. Pediatric thyroid location is not just scaled-down adult anatomy, it changes how clinicians approach examination and procedures in a child’s short neck. Palpation landmarks, ultrasound probe placement, and midline surgical planning rely on the relationship of the isthmus to the cricoid and upper trachea, and this view makes that relationship easy to teach. It also supports discussions of common pediatric endocrine scenarios such as congenital hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis, where gland size and symmetry are assessed before correlating with thyroxine (T4) and TSH patterns.
