Description
Seen from the medial aspect of the male ankle and hindfoot, the inferior extensor retinaculum spans from the anterolateral calcaneus toward the medial malleolus, forming a thickened fascial band over the anterior tarsus. Its proximal attachment sits adjacent to the sinus tarsi and calcaneofibular region, while its medial expansions blend with the plantar aponeurosis and the medial septa near the sustentaculum tali. Deep to the retinaculum, the extensor tendons and their synovial sheaths pass anterior to the ankle joint, with the tibialis anterior tendon lying more medially than extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus occupying a more lateral course.
