Description

Centered on the medial thigh and groin, the adductor longus is highlighted on an anterior female figure, running from the body of the pubis just inferior to the pubic crest toward the middle third of the linea aspera on the posterior femur. Its superficial belly lies medial to the sartorius and lateral to the gracilis, forming part of the muscular contour of the proximal medial thigh. Superiorly, the muscle sits just inferior to the inguinal ligament and adjacent to the pubic symphysis, with the pelvis and proximal femur faintly visualized to anchor its origin and distal attachment. Clinically, the adductor longus is a primary generator of groin pain in athletes, with proximal tendinopathy and acute strains occurring near the pubic origin during cutting and kicking, and the anterior view helps distinguish it from iliopsoas-related pain that localizes more lateral and deep. Its relationship to the femoral triangle matters: the adductor longus forms the medial border, a key surface landmark when teaching femoral pulse palpation, femoral hernia assessment, or planning an anterior approach to vascular access. Clear separation from gracilis also supports discussions of pes anserinus confusion and medial thigh referral patterns. Commonly tender. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and kinesiology modules covering hip adduction mechanics, in sports medicine texts illustrating adductor strain anatomy and rehabilitation targets, or in clinical education materials that map femoral triangle boundaries and groin examination landmarks on a female body habitus. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
