Description
Running obliquely across the anterior thigh, the sartorius arises from the anterior superior iliac spine and courses inferomedially over the proximal quadriceps, forming a long, ribbon-like strap that crosses both the hip and knee joints. Its belly lies superficial to the rectus femoris and vastus medialis region, then narrows toward the medial knee where it approaches the pes anserinus insertion on the anteromedial proximal tibia, adjacent to the gracilis and semitendinosus tendons. Proximally, the muscle’s lateral border relates to the anterior superior iliac spine and iliac crest contour, while distally it sits medial to the patella and anterior to the medial femoral condyle. Clinically, sartorius matters because it is both a surface landmark and a frequent player in medial knee pain patterns: the pes anserinus complex and underlying bursa can become inflamed in runners and in patients with knee osteoarthritis, producing tenderness a few centimeters distal to the medial joint line. At the groin, the sartorius forms the lateral boundary of the femoral triangle, a relationship used when orienting to the femoral nerve, artery, and vein during vascular access and when teaching safe palpation of the femoral pulse just inferior to the inguinal ligament. Small muscle, big landmark.
