Description
Centered in the anterior skeleton, the os coxae is emphasized to frame the female hip joint, with the ilium superiorly flaring to the iliac crest, the pubis anteromedially meeting at the pubic symphysis, and the ischium forming the inferolateral margin of the obturator foramen. Laterally, the acetabulum faces anterolaterally to receive the head of the femur, while the femoral neck angles medially toward the greater and lesser trochanters. Superior to the acetabulum, the anterior superior iliac spine and anterior inferior iliac spine sit as palpable landmarks along the anterior pelvic brim. Clear orientation. Female pelvic morphology matters when you need to teach why hip and pelvis are assessed together, not as isolated bones, because acetabular coverage, femoral neck-shaft angle, and pelvic breadth influence gait mechanics and load transfer across the lumbosacral junction.
