Description
Anterior head and upper neck anatomy is rendered with the superficial muscles of facial expression layered over the bony framework, including frontalis over the forehead, orbicularis oculi encircling the palpebral fissure, and orbicularis oris forming a sphincter around the oral aperture. Lateral to the nasal ala, levator labii superioris and zygomaticus major/minor run inferolaterally toward the upper lip and oral commissure, while buccinator occupies the cheek deep to the modiolus region. Posterolaterally, masseter spans from the zygomatic arch to the mandibular ramus, and temporalis is implied superiorly at the temporal fossa, with platysma descending superficially into the anterior neck. Nerve branches course across these planes, and the facial and cervical veins are shown in relation to the mandibular border and sternocleidomastoid region. Clear landmarks. Clinical teaching often hinges on these surface to deep relationships because facial nerve (CN VII) motor branches traverse the parotid region and cross the masseter before entering the mimetic musculature, a pathway that guides incision planning in parotidectomy and facelift approaches. The same arrangement explains why buccal branch injury can blunt smile symmetry at the oral commissure, while marginal mandibular branch injury can depress lower lip function during submandibular or neck procedures. Arterial and venous channels in the perioral and perinasal regions also frame discussions of the facial dangerous area and venous connections toward the cavernous sinus. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy labs, dental and maxillofacial surgery teaching files, and otolaryngology publications that need an anterior map of facial expression muscles alongside mastication anatomy and neurovascular course. It also fits patient education for facial nerve palsy, Botox injection planning, and reconstructive flap orientation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
