Description

Shown in left lateral profile, the female head and neck are rendered with superficial facial musculature overlying the skull and mandible, including orbicularis oculi around the palpebral fissure, zygomaticus major and minor coursing inferomedially toward the modiolus, and orbicularis oris encircling the oral aperture. Inferior to the zygomatic arch, the masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible, while the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process toward the sternum and clavicle, forming a prominent anterolateral cervical landmark. Yellow peripheral nerves arborize across the cheek, lips, and neck in the expected distribution of facial and cervical branches, with blue superficial veins tracking in parallel planes, and pale facial fat pads, including the buccal fat pad, interposed between mimetic muscles and the skin. Lateral facial anatomy becomes clinically concrete when you have to predict what moves, and what fails to move, after a nerve injury. The branching pattern of the facial nerve across the parotidomasseteric region explains why parotidectomy, rhytidectomy, and even traumatic lacerations near the mandibular angle can produce selective weakness of the marginal mandibular or buccal branches, changing oral commissure position and smile symmetry. Fat pads shown adjacent to the perioral and midface muscles also map directly to filler planes and surgical dissection layers, where staying superficial to the SMAS versus deep to it changes both aesthetic outcome and neurovascular risk. Small distances matter.
