Description
Presented in lateral profile, the head and upper neck are dissected to emphasize the superficial and deep muscles of facial expression and mastication, including the frontalis, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major and minor, buccinator, orbicularis oris, depressor anguli oris, and the masseter overlying the lateral ramus of the mandible. Superiorly, the temporalis fans across the temporal fossa and converges inferiorly toward the coronoid process, while posterior to the mandibular angle the parotid region is delineated. Yellow neural pathways track along the cheek and periauricular area, and red and blue vessels course anterior to the ear and across the face in their expected superficial planes. Key bony landmarks of the cranium and mandible remain visible as spatial reference. Lateral facial anatomy is where function and iatrogenic risk intersect. The course of the facial nerve in relation to the parotid gland and masseter is central to parotidectomy planning and to understanding why marginal mandibular branch weakness produces lower lip asymmetry. Vascular landmarks in this projection also map cleanly onto common procedures, from local anesthetic infiltration near the infraorbital region to managing traumatic lacerations along the facial artery and vein.
