Description
Spanning the scalp to the anterior neck, the semi-transparent overlay brings the superficial muscles of facial expression into register with the deeper muscles of mastication and the bony framework beneath. Laterally, the masseter blankets the ramus and angle of the mandible, while the temporalis fans superiorly toward the temporal fossa; anteriorly, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and orbicularis oris forms a sphincter at the mouth, with zygomaticus major and minor coursing inferomedially from the zygomatic bone to the upper lip. Inferior to the mandibular body, the suprahyoid and infrahyoid strap muscles align in the midline, and the sternocleidomastoid marks the anterolateral boundary of the neck over deeper neurovascular structures. Bone and soft tissue alignments are readable at a glance. Understanding the layering here matters when you are teaching why facial movement is not simply “skin over bone”: branches of the facial nerve travel within the parotid region and then spread superficially across the face, so incisions, lacerations, and parotid surgery risk selective weakness of brow elevation, eye closure, or smile. The juxtaposition of masseter, mandibular ramus, and adjacent vessels also supports clinical discussions of bruxism-related hypertrophy, temporomandibular disorders, and the relationship of the facial artery as it crosses the inferior border of the mandible anterior to the masseter. A practical surgical map. Use this illustration for head and neck anatomy courses covering muscles of facial expression versus mastication, for dental and OMFS teaching on mandibular landmarks and masseteric region approaches, or for patient-facing materials explaining facial nerve injury patterns and parotidectomy risk zones. It also fits publisher layouts that need a realistic portrait with accurate internal anatomy for ENT, plastic surgery, or speech and swallowing modules. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
