Description
Anterior head and neck anatomy is rendered with a semi-transparent integument, allowing the principal muscles of facial expression to be read in situ across the forehead, periorbital region, nose, and lips. Superiorly, the frontal belly of occipitofrontalis blends into the epicranial aponeurosis, while orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and zygomaticus major and minor run inferolaterally from the zygomatic bone toward the angle of the mouth. Deeper lateral facial musculature is suggested by the masseter over the mandibular ramus and the buccinator in the cheek, and inferiorly the sternocleidomastoid descends from the mastoid process toward the manubrium and clavicle with suprahyoid and infrahyoid planes layered around the midline airway. Facial expression muscles matter because they are tethered to skin rather than bone, so their fiber direction predicts wrinkle lines, asymmetry, and the displacement patterns seen after facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) injury. This view is also practical for correlating surface landmarks with deeper structures, for example planning botulinum toxin injection sites while avoiding diffusion toward levator palpebrae superioris (ptosis risk) or appreciating why parotidectomy and facelift incisions must respect the course of facial nerve branches across the masseter.
