Description

Radiating from the thoracic heart, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch and gives rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, with the common carotids ascending superiorly within the neck toward the skull base. Medial to the sternocleidomastoid region, the internal carotid arteries course cranially without cervical branches, while the external carotid arteries distribute more superficially to the face and scalp; laterally, the subclavian arteries pass beneath the clavicles toward the axilla as they become the axillary arteries. Blue venous channels accompany the arterial tree, with internal jugular veins descending to join the subclavian veins and form the brachiocephalic veins that converge on the superior vena cava. Color separation makes the arteriole-level branching pattern readable against a semi-transparent, x-ray style male upper body. An upper body angiographic-style rendering like this is where students finally connect names to pathways: carotid versus vertebral inflow to the brain, and the direct continuity between the aortic arch and the great vessels of the neck. Stroke anatomy lives here. The cervical carotid bifurcation (common carotid into internal and external) is the usual site of atherosclerotic plaque, and its relationship to the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve in the carotid sheath frames both carotid endarterectomy planning and central venous access hazards.
