Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered on a female torso with the heart centered in the middle mediastinum, slightly left of the midline, and oriented obliquely with the apex pointing inferolaterally toward the left. From the left ventricle, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch and proximal descending thoracic aorta, while the pulmonary trunk arises anteriorly from the right ventricle and bifurcates into right and left pulmonary arteries headed laterally to each lung. Venous return is organized into the superior vena cava entering the right atrium from above, the inferior vena cava from below, and paired pulmonary veins coursing medially from the lungs into the left atrium. Color coding separates oxygenated arterial flow (red) from deoxygenated venous flow (blue) to clarify the systemic and pulmonary circuits. This is the view clinicians reach for when teaching the circulation as a closed loop rather than as isolated vessels: right heart to pulmonary arteries to pulmonary veins to left heart, then out through the aorta to the body and back through the venae cavae. Relationships in the chest matter. The pulmonary trunk sits anterior to the ascending aorta, and the superior vena cava lies right-lateral to the ascending aorta, a spatial arrangement that explains what fills the mediastinal silhouette on a frontal chest radiograph and what you encounter during median sternotomy, pericardiotomy, and cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass.
