Presented as an exploded adult human skull, the calvaria separates into its principal cranial bones, with the paired parietals positioned superolaterally between the frontal bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly, and the temporal bones lying inferolateral with their squamous parts forming the lateral cranial wall. Sutural margins read clearly in this layout, including the coronal, sagittal, lambdoid, and squamosal sutures, along with the pterion region where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid components converge. Inferior to the cranial vault, the facial skeleton spreads out around the orbits and nasal aperture, with the maxillae medial to the zygomatics and the mandible shown detached below, oriented for temporomandibular articulation. Dentition appears separated from the alveolar processes. Exploded skull views are where bony relationships stop being memorized and start being understood. Seeing the temporal bone disarticulated from the parietal and sphenoid clarifies the thinness of the squamous temporal region and the clinical stakes at the pterion, where middle meningeal artery injury can follow a lateral blow and produce an epidural hematoma.
