Description
Centered within the lateral skull, the sphenoid bone sits posterior to the ethmoid and orbital walls and anterior to the temporal bone, its greater wing forming a broad wedge of the middle cranial fossa between frontal and temporal regions. From this perspective you can trace the contour of the greater wing toward the pterion and follow its posterior margin toward the squamosal suture, while the zygomatic arch and lateral orbital rim mark the transition into the facial skeleton. Deep to the zygomatic process, the sphenoid contributes to the infratemporal fossa and approaches the temporomandibular joint region, where the mandibular condyle articulates with the temporal bone. Cervical vertebrae C1 to C7 extend inferiorly, maintaining the craniovertebral alignment beneath the occipital region. Clear landmarks.
